Avon Cycles: A Legacy of Pride and Innovation Historical Background Avon Cycles, a beacon of the Punjabi entrepreneurial spirit, traces its origins back to the aftermath of India's partition in 1947. The Pahwa Brothers recognized the urgent need for affordable mobility for the common man. In 1948, they established a small manufacturing unit focusing on bicycle saddles and brakes, laying the foundation for what would become a leading name in the cycling industry.
Core Values From its inception, Avon Cycles has adhered to principles of quality, affordability, and ethical business practices. These values cultivated trust among customers and dealers alike, enabling the company to thrive in a competitive landscape. The Pahwa family’s unwavering commitment to human values and fairness has helped build long-lasting relationships within a vast dealer network both in India and internationally. Expansion and Diversification As demand grew, Avon expanded its operations, diversifying into the production of nearly all components necessary for bicycle assembly. This forward-thinking approach led to the establishment of facilities producing special-purpose steel strips and tubes, as well as Hot Rolled Steel. Avon’s unique position as the only group globally with full backward integration sets it apart in the industry.
In 1997, the business underwent reorganization, with control passing solely to Mr. Onkar Singh Pahwa’s family. This shift combined the agility of a family-owned enterprise with the structured approach of a corporate entity, fostering both trust and confidence in its operations. Manufacturing Excellence Avon Cycles operates its headquarters and two manufacturing plants along the G.T. Road in Ludhiana, Punjab—a city known as the “Cycle Capital of India.” With a production capacity exceeding 10,000 bicycles daily, the company is set to enhance its capabilities with a new state-of-the-art facility in Neelon. This investment of 100 crores will enable the production of aluminum and steel frames, catering to both mass premium and high-end segments.
Additionally, a facility in Hajipur, Bihar, serves the Eastern markets, contributing to an impressive annual output of 2.5 million bicycles. Avon prides itself on maintaining modern machinery and technological systems that rival the best globally. Commitment to Quality and Innovation Quality remains paramount at Avon Cycles, with extensive investments made in advanced manufacturing processes. A specialized Phosphate Treatment Plant ensures the durability of paint, a crucial factor in bicycle longevity.
The Research & Development (R&D) department plays a pivotal role in innovating designs and specifications tailored to market demands. Recognized by the Government of India, Avon's R&D unit continually upgrades its capabilities, employing advanced design software and 3D printing technology for product development. A Family-Centric Workforce Avon’s workforce is a cornerstone of its success. The company values its employees, fostering a culture of motivation and belonging. Many workers have spent their careers at Avon, with their families continuing the legacy, creating a strong generational bond within the organization.
Avon Cycles stands as a testament to the vision of its founders and the dedication of its team. With a rich history and a forward-looking approach, Avon remains committed to delivering high-quality bicycles to enthusiasts while upholding the values of trust, innovation, and affordability that have defined its journey for over 70 years.
